A few common questions
How does WebP compression affect my image?
This tool uses the browser’s WebP encoder. Lower settings usually make smaller files but can soften detail or introduce artifacts. Higher settings generally preserve more detail and make larger files. Even the maximum setting is not a promise of lossless output. Compare the generated preview and keep your original for editing.
Will PNG transparency be preserved?
Yes. Fully and partly transparent PNG pixels keep their transparency in the WebP. The checkerboard is only a preview background; it is not added to the file. A JPG keeps its existing background. This tool does not remove backgrounds.
Will dimensions and photo orientation stay the same?
The exported image keeps the original dimensions without resizing or upscaling. JPEG EXIF rotation and reflection are applied to the pixels, so a portrait photo stays the right way up. Width and height swap for a 90-degree rotation. Only the selected-image thumbnail may be reduced for display.
Why is the WebP sometimes larger?
Output size depends on image detail, dimensions, existing compression, the quality setting, and the browser’s encoder. An already efficient JPG or simple PNG may become larger. The converter compares the actual encoded byte counts and reports savings or an increase; it never promises a fixed reduction.
Which files can I convert?
Choose one JPEG or static PNG up to 20 MB (20,000,000 bytes) and 24 megapixels (24,000,000 pixels), with neither side exceeding 16,384 pixels. Limits are inclusive. Animated PNGs are rejected rather than silently losing their animation. File contents and successful decoding are checked, regardless of the extension.
What if my browser cannot create WebP?
The converter checks the output type and WebP file signature before offering a download. If the browser cannot encode WebP, you will see an error. Try a current browser with WebP encoding support; a PNG fallback will not be offered as a WebP file. JavaScript, image decoding, and Canvas support are required.
Are my images uploaded or stored?
No. Conversion happens entirely in your browser, with no image uploads or external APIs. Start over or leave the page to release image resources. A file is saved to your device only when you choose to download it.
Are metadata and colors preserved exactly?
The tool exports pixels through Canvas and does not copy original camera, GPS, or other metadata. Browser color management and compression can change colors. Large images also require memory beyond their file size, so a device with limited memory may need a smaller image even within the limits.
